What Is Delta-8-THC

Cannabis produces hundreds of medicinal compounds but none so special and common as Delta-9-THC, also known as THC alone. Renowned for its ability to relieve nausea, pain and sleeplessness, THC also provides an intense euphoric feeling as the only compound we know. Yet Delta-9 is not the only THC on the block in the chemical chain.

Delta-8-THC also comes up with only one acid chain ahead, and is a psychoactive compound that provides soothing qualities – but with a few key distinctions that might make Delta-8 even more common in future. The only thing is that this is very elusive.

Delta-8 THC is among hundreds of cannabinoids contained naturally in cannabis. It occurs in very small quantities, which is why it must be processed and refined by manufacturers into oils, edibles, tinctures, and other concentrates.

Like other cannabinoids, Delta-8 THC interacts with endocannabinoid system in the body. Unlike Delta-9 THC, Delta-8 has an affinity in the brain and nervous system to CB1 receptors which it binds to produce psychotropic effects. Despite some chemical variations between the two, when absorbed, Delta-8 interacts with the body nearly the same as Delta-9.

How Is DELTA-8-THC Different?

"Delta" refers, in chemistry, to the double bond in the molecular structure of the compound. Delta bonds have more electrons, and cannabinoids can interact differently with the body than single bond. The only difference between Delta-8 and Delta-9 THC is the location of that double bond on the chain of carbon atoms. Delta-8 on the 8th carbon chain has a double bond, and Delta-9 on the 9th carbon chain has a double bond. It tends to be a minor difference but it is sufficiently important to cause significantly different cognitive and physical results.

The Reported Benefits Of Delta-8-THC

Dr Raphael Mechoulam, a famous cannabis researcher, discovered Delta-8 in 1965. Since then, scientists experiment with the compound. Researchers found in 1975 that Delta-8 is capable of shrinking cancer tumors in rats. In 1995, Israeli scientists discovered that Delta-8 could have a profound effect on the treatment for pediatric cancer. After more than 480 high-dose Delta-8 THC therapies, 100 per cent of patients reported experiencing relief from nausea caused by chemotherapy.

Consumers registered a high feeling comparable to Delta-9 THC on a cognitive level but with a few key differences: unlike Delta-9, which can have a sedative effect, Delta-8 is more associated with clear-headed and energized feelings. It has tremendous consequences for patients and customers who enjoy THC's psychoactive and therapeutic effects but who want to work with more focus and clarity during the daytime.

Studies also suggest that Delta-8 could help the body produce a neurotransmitter that’s responsible for cognition, memory, arousal, and neuroplasticity.

Though work has been limited due to cannabis prohibition, what we know about Delta-8 is exciting for growers, manufacturers, patients and recreational users. As more people report a positive experience with Delta-8, along with a noticeable change in consumer behavior, we may see more products entering the market.

Can Delta 8 THC Get You High Like Delta 9 THC?

Delta-8 can definitely get you high, but not exactly like Delta-9 THC. According to the National Cancer Institute, Delta-8 THC shows "lower psychotropic potency" than Delta-9, and can bind with brain receptors differently than Delta-9, thereby explaining the impact variability. As such, consumers with Delta-8 THC have reported feeling less intense psychoactive effects. But still noticeable. Delta-8 users feel stimulation of the appetite, and euphoria – just not as profoundly as THC users do.
